Divorce and its Effects on Families
Divorce has garnered a large amount of public attention in recent years, as the divorce rate has skyrocketed and families are beginning to feel the devastating effects of this event. This brief article will try to explain several facts about divorce in America, then summarize the problems it has on kids as well as the entire family.
Divorce means the legal termination of a matrimony The term has become common in the homes, offices, and other venues in the USA. While divorce is a term we mention casually we should take a look at the numbers that are declining over time.
A study conducted in 2005 states the national divorce rate is at its lowest point since 1970. This low rate comes after a long period of high divorce rates and we are just now starting to understand some of the impacts that are pushed onto families that are in this situation. A report issued by the National Marriage Project at Rutgers states that although the divorce rate is falling, the number of children growing up with both biological parents stands at 63%, one of the lowest worldwide. The high divorce rates of the previous decades has resulted in this fallout.
Continuing into the effects of divorce on families, we will start with the financial effect on the family unit. Following a divorce, both parties involved are starting a new part of their life. The worst affected are women, 73% of whom reported a drop in standard of living as compared with 58% of men. Personal belongings for each party will remain unchanged, but the courts will split joint property.
Children are often the most harmed in a divorce. Overall stability and attitude decline, along with self esteem and trouble getting along with parents. The emotional turmoil of being taken away from the natural born parents can result in permanent damage to a child’s development and the child could have problems learning and socializing with children of the same age, and as the child matures in age it can be hard to make and keep friends. As well as this, research has shown that teenagers who have divorced parents have a greater chance of drinking alcohol, taking drugs and having a decreased socioeconomic status in general.
The negative affects of divorce carry on into adulthood. It has been reported by studies that the anxiety present from a divorce can have a negative impact on developing and maintaining a future long term relationship.
There is hope that divorce will become a lesser stress on families now that more education on the topic is available and the rate of divoce is dropping. More issues are involved than can be mentioned in this paper, but the divorce rate is beginning to improve in the United States.
