The Part That Passports Played In The Russian Spy Incident
Border security is in the headlines a lot lately and rightfully so. Passports play a big roll in making it possible for illegal immigrants and terrorists to cause problems. Since they know how to get a U.S. passport, the security of the United States has been compromised. Recently, you may have seen on the news the story about the spies actually being caught within our borders.
New York was recently in the papers concerning the ten Russian spies that were caught. Anna Chapman was one of them and she and nine other Russian spies plead guilty to “conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign country” and for getting sensitive information for a foreign government. They had also participated in money laundering but those charges were cancelled. The United States chose to exchange these spied for four American spied currently held in Russia. Not since the Cold War has such a large espionage issue occurred.
Anna Chapman, also known as Anya Kushchenko, married a British man named Alex Chapman back in 2002, but they later divorced in 2006. The story behind their marriage is interesting and reflects Chapman’s life as a spy. They met at a party in 2002 and married less than six months later. They were happily married and head over heels in love according to Alex Chapman’s father, but Anna grew cold and distant. Soon she was meeting with Russian friends and a divorce resulted.
After this, she moved to New York, where she was working to gather information for her home government in Russia. Soon she sent a panicked call to her father, a Russian diplomat named Vasily Kushchenko. In this call, which was monitored by the US, Chapman voiced her concern that she might have been discovered. This call only hastened Chapman’s arrest, along with her other espionage agents.
This story has an interesting twist: Anna Chapman was stripped of her United Kingdom citizenship as well as her passport. This passport and citizenship were from when she was married to Alex Chapman, and even though she wishes to return to the United Kingdom one day, she is officially not allowed back in the country. Hopefully the whole world can see just how what kind of power revoking new USA passports can have, including our own government and passport agencies.
It may cause some of us to lie awake at night when we think of the harm that can be done by a terrorist or spy getting hold of a passport and using it for dangerous and evil purposes. The US passport bureau is doing everything it can to prevent this from happening but we all have to part of the solution. Criminals know how to get a passport. Sometimes they look for an easy mark in their attempt to steal one so be diligent when protecting your passport and if it is lost or you think it might have been stolen, contact the governmental authorities immediately.
